I am giving this book a 4.5 star rating.
Riley Sager did it again! This time with a thriller/horror novel. I had to read this book during the day. It sure did give me the chills.
The novel centered around Maggie. Her father passed away and gave her a house that was the subject to a lot of grief in her life. Her father wrote a true account of her family living there and the haunting that forced her family to leave one night and never return to the house. They literally ran and did not take any of their belongings with them. The book was a huge success. Maggie, against the wishes of her dying father and mother, goes back to the house to flip and sell it but also to uncover the truth behind that evening. Maggie was so young that she did not have memories of that evening. Can she uncover the truth behind the haunting or maybe there really are ghosts?
When heading into this novel, I thought it would be similar in Riley Sager’s other novels. Although, there are many similarities, there are also many differences. He likes to use a memory loss of some sort and then blend the truth as the narrator pieces together the mystery along with the reader. Often times, this is a slow burn. I enjoy this style. One major difference is how terrifying this novel is. I do not like horror novels at all, but this novel did a good job at having the horror novel blending into the story. The ending was great. One minute, you think the book is done, then the next minute a twist or a turn. There was a minor part of the ending that I felt did not add up while some was not summed up for me. that is the reason why I rated it a 4.5 star rating. But overall, I really enjoyed the ending!
I cannot wait for another Riley Sager novel!
