Writing to authors

I recently wrote to an author that I loved growing up. I included an envelope with postage, and he sent me back a signed bookmark! My inner circle of book friends wanted to know more information on how to do this. Here are some tips to help you craft a successful message:

  1. Do Your Research: Familiarize yourself with the author’s work. Mention specific books or themes that resonate with you to show genuine interest.
  2. Be Polite and Concise: Keep your message respectful and to the point. Authors often have busy schedules, so a brief note is more likely to be read.
  3. Include a Personal Touch: Share how their work has impacted you personally. A heartfelt message can make your request stand out.
  4. Requesting the Postcard: Politely ask if they could send you a signed postcard, bookmark, etc. You might say something like, “If it’s not too much trouble, I would love a signed postcard.”
  5. Provide an Address: Make it easy for them by including your mailing address. I created an envelope with postage with my address already printed on it.
  6. Use Social Media: Many authors are active on platforms like Twitter or Instagram. Engaging with them there can also increase your chances of getting a response. I engage with a few authors on social media. Some authors like/comment on my posts!
  7. Be Patient: Authors might take time to respond, so give them a little while before following up, if you do. *I did not follow-up. But within a few weeks, I got surprise mail!*
  8. Respect Their Decision: Some authors may not be able to fulfill such requests, and that’s okay. Appreciate whatever response you receive.

Finding addresses for authors can be a bit tricky, as many prefer to keep their contact information private. However, here are some tips to help you in your search:

  1. Official Websites: Many authors have personal websites that may include contact information or a mailing address specifically for fan correspondence.
  2. Publisher Information: Check the author’s publisher’s website. Publishers often have a way to contact authors through their website, and some may forward fan mail.
  3. Social Media: Authors often share their mailing addresses on platforms like Twitter or Instagram, especially for fan mail. Look through their posts or bios.
  4. Fan Communities: Online fan forums or social media groups dedicated to specific authors can be helpful. Other fans may share tips or addresses they’ve successfully used.

Here are some tips for sending books or other items to authors for signing:

  1. Choose the Right Item: Select a book or item that is meaningful to you and the author. It could be a specific book, merchandise, or even a postcard.
  2. Include a Note: Write a short note expressing your appreciation for their work. Mention the specific item you’re sending and why it’s special to you.
  3. Return Shipping: Include a prepaid return envelope or package. This makes it easier for the author to send your item back to you. Be sure to use the correct postage.
  4. Address Clearly: Write your address clearly and legibly.
  5. Timing: Consider sending your item during times when authors are less busy, such as after a book release or major event, to increase the likelihood of a response.
  6. Avoid Overloading: Don’t send multiple items at once. Stick to one book or item to make it easier for the author.
  7. Check Policies: Some authors may have specific policies about signing items. If you can, check their website or social media for any guidelines.

The likelihood of receiving something in return from an author:

  1. Author’s Popularity: Well-known authors might receive a high volume of fan mail, making it less likely for them to respond personally.
  2. Availability: Some authors are more accessible and actively engage with their fans, while others may not have the time to respond to every request.
  3. Method of Contact: Sending a physical item, like a book or postcard, might yield better results than just an email or social media message.
  4. Personalization: Messages that are heartfelt and specific to the author’s work may increase your chances of a reply, as they stand out more.
  5. Timing: If you send your request shortly after a book release or during a promotional event, authors might be more likely to respond.
  6. Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope (SASE): Including a SASE can significantly increase the chances of receiving a reply, as it makes it easier for the author to respond.

In general, while there’s no guarantee, many fans do report positive experiences, so it’s worth a try!
