So you may be asking yourself, “what is a genre?”

Genre means a type of art (literature, music, art, etc.) that is broken down by a specific form, content, and/or style. For example, literature has four main genres: poetry, plays, fiction, and non-fiction. Another genre would be Young Adult, Middle School, New Adult, and Adult. These genres have different features and/or functions that separate them from one another.

Genres also have subgenres! Subgenres can just be broken down even further. For example, Fiction can be broken down to categories like historical fiction, romance, science-fiction, etc. These can be broken down even further. For example, Historical fiction can be broken down to World War II fiction, then broken down to either soldier’s perspective or the Holocaust. Another example is romance. I many be reading a romance book different then the person next to me. They may be reading the subgenre of erotica. I may be reading a rom-com.

So the next time that someone asks me what “type” of books that I read, my answer many be a lot more complex!
