The writing leaned YA in tone, which was odd for an adult book. I’m not sure if that’s just Holly Jackson’s style (since she usually writes YA), or if it was intentional to keep the pacing brisk and the voice relatable. Either way, it worked—but it did feel a bit more youthful than expected for an adult thriller.
The characters, especially Jet and Billy, were well-developed, and I enjoyed their dynamic. However, I wish we got more depth and complexity from the pool of suspects. The story could’ve used a little more buildup around the mystery itself—especially because the ending felt quite rushed. I even went back and reread the last few chapters thinking I had missed something… but I hadn’t. It just wrapped up a little too fast for my taste. I also thought there were alternative crimes that she discovered in her investgation that should have been “wrapped up” as well as her murder.
Still, the story kept me engaged throughout, and the unique setup made it stand out from other thrillers. A solid 4-star read for me!
