Review of “The Vanishing Half” by Brit Bennett

This book is about twins who leave home at a young age. The twins take two different paths in life (One decides to pass as a white woman). It is a complicated family drama, a critique on race/racism as well as class in America, sex identity, etc.

I enjoyed the 1st part of the book whereas the second part dragged on for me. It was very well-written. It was beautiful and complex. It is a character driven novel. The novel makes the characters so real for you to imagine. It is told in flashbacks and multiple POVs, which makes for a more complex novel. I did not enjoy the transitions in time. They were not defined like I would have wanted. Additionally, it was a slow burn and the ending fell flat for me.

Overall, a great novel! I would recommend it to others!
