Emotional and powerful book! I am giving this book a 4.5 star review.
Adunni is a 14 year old girl. She is sold to an older man by her father for marriage. She is able to escape there just to be enslaved by another wicked woman. She dreams of a life where she is free and can get a proper education. She would love to be a teacher. We see Adunni flourish when provided with tutoring sessions with Ms. Tia. Could this be Adunni’s chance to become a teacher?
This story is able to bring the voices of the slave trade in Nigeria in the open. In addition, how women are not treated as equals within their communities. They are property with their own fathers, husbands, etc. They are not even allowed to get a proper education. These are things that a lot of cultures take for granted.
This book was beautifully written and just flowed. I really wanted to know if Adunni would make it to her dreams. I was rooting for her throughout the entire book. I liked the Nigeria facts throughout the novel as well. I felt like it was teaching me about Nigeria as I kept reading.
I was worried I would have a hard time with the broken English at the beginning but I got used to it.
Trigger warnings: Rape, assault, domestic violence, slavery, etc. This book dealt with a lot of heavy subjects.
