Stuck Up and Stupid is a modern-day retelling of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, co-authored by Cecily Anne Paterson and Penny Tangey. Set in a small Australian beach town, the story follows Lily, a teenager who dreams of becoming a serious filmmaker and has no interest in the world of fame or celebrity culture. Her quiet life is disrupted when Hollywood heartthrob Dorian Khan and his glamorous co-star Casey arrive in town to shoot a…

I went into Stuck Up and Stupid with a lot of excitement—it’s a modern spin on Pride and Prejudice, which I absolutely love. But this adaptation didn’t come close to what I hoped it would be.

Right away, the writing style threw me off. It jumps between multiple characters’ perspectives in third person without any clear transitions. One paragraph you’re following Lily, and the next you’re suddenly in Dorian or Casey’s head, all without warning. It made the story hard to follow and left me constantly confused about whose thoughts I was supposed to be in.

The characters themselves didn’t help. Dorian came across as completely lifeless, but most of the characters did. I didn’t feel invested in any of the supporting cast either—no one felt fully formed or memorable. A lot of the banter or complaining was repetetive.

While the book sets out to reimagine a beloved classic, it loses much of what makes Pride and Prejudice so compelling. The relationships felt forced, the tension was missing, and the pacing was awkward. It dragged through the middle and then rushed through the ending, giving no real satisfying ending.

I really wanted to enjoy this, but it just didn’t land. The story felt flat, the characters lacked spark, and the structure made it hard to stay engaged. Sadly, this one just didn’t work for me.
