Whew! What an amazing book. Broken Country is a powerful, emotional, and gripping read that blends genres beautifully—it’s part love story, part murder mystery, and part courtroom drama. Told in a dual timeline, the story unravels slowly, with each chapter peeling back another layer of truth. The pacing is definitely a slow burn, but I never felt bored. In fact, I flew through it in just two days because I couldn’t put it down.
One of the strongest aspects of this book is the characters. They’re so well-developed and deeply human—flawed, raw, and real. You really feel the emotional weight they carry, and that made the story all the more impactful. The author doesn’t shy away from difficult topics either. There are definite trigger warnings here: loss of a child, infidelity, grief, and trauma. It’s heavy, but handled with care and nuance.
As the mystery unfolds, you’re fed bits and pieces through both past and present perspectives, and the tension builds so organically. When the big twist hit, I was completely shocked in the best way. It was one of those moments where you have to pause and go, wait… what?! It tied everything together in a way that was both heartbreaking and brilliant.
If you’re into emotionally charged stories with complex characters, courtroom drama, and a mystery that keeps you guessing until the end, I can’t recommend this one enough. It stayed with me long after I turned the last page.
