Review of “From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home” by Tembi Locke

I am rating this book a 2.5-3 star review.

This was truly a sad story. It took me 6 months to read it the whole way through. I almost DNF it.

This is a memoir about a woman who loses her husband from cancer. Her husband’s family never accepted her into their family. It is about grief mainly with her daughter and how they overcame their grief to move on with their lives.

It was beautifully written and would recommend this to someone, but it was not a favorite of mine. It just fell flat for me. I really connected with them in the beginning; but as the novel continued, I felt a disconnect from them (if that makes sense).  I think I would have rather seen a lot more of the happy times and before her husband battled cancer and passed away. I found it just too slow and sad for my taste. I would have also liked to have move of her journey through life; her work, her child, her family. I felt like I was reading about a sad woman the entire novel that loved to talk about food.
